Did you know that in Sanskrit, Gu refers to darkness and ru means light?
That is the origin of Guru – someone who leads you from the darkness to light – a great teacher.
The evolution of words is fascinating. When you research a word, the origin might surprise you. Often, the word’s origin had a literal meaning that later evolved into something more figurative.
Which leads me to the question –
Ever notice how many Gurus there are out there?
Some are self-anointed, while others are dubbed that by the media.
- Is that fair?
- Shouldn’t there be some kind of election?
- You know – like a papal election
Seems to me you need to do more than sit on a mountaintop of words to be a Guru.
If You Build It, They Will Come
Recently, I shared an article with a favorite client of mine. I love how passionate this man is about his work and he has been doing it – well, let’s put it this way – he’s been around longer than me.
Yes, it’s true.
The author of the article was blasting the cornerstone of what my client believes. After respectfully disagreeing with the author’s position, my client expressed to the author how “interesting” it was that he did not offer any better solution.
That had me pumping my fist and shouting, “Yes!”
- You can build a convincing mountain of words
- You can tell me about all the things I am doing wrong
- You can offer no solutions or a cookie-cutter approach
- But, you won’t receive my vote for Guru
Whether you believe you are or not, we all want to be seen as unique. Your problem isn’t the same as my problem. Your solutions aren’t the same as my solutions.
A Guru comes down off the mountaintop and offers unique solutions.
Seen any lately?

This does bring to light just how many “Gues” there are in the world! 🙂

Many, many, many-few, in my humble opinion, that deserve the title. Thanks for stopping by, Kim!

Oh lord! I JUST blogged about this this morning! I swear I didn’t see this beforehand. 🙂
I wonder if we’re seeing the same “gurus”, Cathy. Something stuck in my craw last week and resulted in my “experts and gurus” post. 🙂

LOL! Lori, I have always said we seem to run on the same generator. I know you didn’t steal the idea. 😀
I was just about to take a trip on over to your blog. See you there. Thanks for stopping by, Lori.
