In an age of voice mail, message centers, and call waiting, future generations may never hear a busy signal.
That annoying frustration of customer service gone by.
Or the phone end of a friend you cannot reach.
The incessant beeping may have disappeared, but we all still receive a busy signal on life.
- The unanswered email
- The call not returned
- The life happens forgetfullness
Perhaps it’s because I live with my 90-year-old mother that I hear the silent beep of life’s busy signal.
For all the joy technology has brought to my mom through the connection of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, I see the pain, too.
A simple call lights up her day and a shared photo brings a smile.
By and large, my family is very good about staying in touch. But, they are not unlike all of us who get caught up in the day-to-day until we are surprised at the time that has passed us by.
When I think about it, my current musing probably also inspired Shouldn’t Technology Mean Better Communication?
The reflection makes me want to be a better friend, a better daughter, sister or aunt. If only for a moment. Because that may be all we will have. A moment.
I want to stop the busy signal of my life.

Cathy, I wonder how many recognize the dial on your red phone or even know where the term “dial tone” came from — 😉
I suspect you stop the busy signal more than many… you take time out, you walk, etc. I meditate, and right now pack to move – oh wait, that’s a busy signal… lol, it is mixed isn’t it.
Cathy says
LOL, Anne. I’m glad at least one person knows what I’m talking about. 😀
A mixed bag indeed. Thanks, Anne. Good luck with the move-seldom fun.

Easy — move to Maine, where the phone won’t even ring. 🙂
I hear you, Cathy. There are too many times we put off connecting with those important people. How many people today live with the regret of not being there more often? Wouldn’t we rather say “I’m glad I did” instead of “I wish I had”?
Cathy says
I think parts of Idaho accomplish the same thing. 🙂 And Amen to the sentiment, Lori. Glad to have you back in civilization. 😉
