Remember when –
- You bought furniture that was already put together?
- Customer service meant talking to a real person?
- Someone else pumped your gas?
If your answer is no, congratulations, you are part of the new generation of our do-it-yourself world.
- When did we become the Facebook generation – the one where opt-out is not an option?
- Or at least it’s pretty near impossible to opt out
Is it so wrong that some of us liked being spoiled?
Blame the Economy
Like every problem we have, most blame the economy.
- Not enough people are buying
- Businesses can’t afford the “extras”
- Staff is being cut
Well maybe more people would buy if they didn’t have to do so darned much themselves.
- More “extras” – more sales
- More sales – more staff
Sounds like a vicious cycle.
What Kind of Progress Is This?
Merriam-Webster defines progress as –
“Gradual betterment; especially the progressive development of humankind.”
They also define it like this –
“A forward or onward movement (as to an objective or to a goal)”
I don’t know about you, but my objective or goal when buying furniture is to have it delivered AND fully assembled.
And my aging boomer body does not feel a gradual betterment with the do-it-yourself approach.
Opt-out Movement
Have you been watching the Made in America segments on ABC World News?
The idea is to get Americans hired and back to work.
Maybe we could get Diane Sawyer to opt-out with us so more workers get hired and get back to spoiling us.
Is that too much to ask?
Are you in?

Trying to speak to a human on the telephone when I am calling a company is really stressful. Yesterday, a delivery company delivered somebody else’s package to my home. So I called them only to have to navigate through their phone system for 15 minutes. Perhaps they should have an option on the phone system for “you got a package by mistake!”

Hi Kristen-Don’t even get me started on customer service. I’ve done that rant a time or two. 🙂
Hitting 0 doesn’t even always work anymore so you are left to deal with their blasted phone tree. Grrr…
Thanks for sharing your frustration – feel free to rant anytime. 🙂
