Remember the scene in The Wizard of Oz where the scarecrow was torn apart?
Scarecrow – “They tore my legs off and they threw them over there. Then they took my chest out and they threw it over there.”
Tin Man – “Well, that’s you all over. They sure knocked the stuffings out of you, didn’t they?”
At times, that’s how social media makes me feel.
The Scarecrow Syndrome
Don’t get me wrong. There’s a lot to like about social media.
- You meet great people from around the world
- It can put your business on the map
- It reconnects lost family and friends
But, sometimes, I just don’t think there’s enough of me to go around.
Just when I thought I had a handle on this social media thing, along comes Google+.
Oh no, more social mediating!
I am totally feeling the Scarecrow.
- They took my left brain and dropped it in LinkedIn
- Then they took my right brain and threw it in this blog
- My hands are all over Twitter
- And my legs are one step behind in Google+
As for Facebook, I’m in denial.
We’re Off to See the Wizard
If that wasn’t enough, there are wizards coming out of our ears – social media wizards and specialty wizards for every platform known to mankind.
Gurus, Experts and Stars – oh my!
You can find their teachings on –
- YouTube
- Slideshare
- Webex
- Vimeo
- Blip.tv
And Lord knows where else.
Then they post links on –
- Google+
- Blogs
And Lord knows where else.
The Final Straw
Remember the moral of the Wizard of Oz story?
Dorothy – ” If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard; because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.”
Sounds good. The only problem is the world is now sitting in my own backyard.
If I only had a brain (left).

Terrific Cathy! Love it.
Cathy says
Thanks, Louise. Can you relate? 🙂 I appreciate you taking the time to drop by.
Roy A. Ackerman, Ph.D., E.A. says
Hmm. Maybe you are just the lion- and lack the courage to deal with yet another (passing?) fad? Or, the tin man, whose brain is already filled with the machinations necessary to master the other gazillion social media… and just needs a new hard drive addition to deal with yet another one?
Not me. I’m Dorothy… I am clicking my shoes… There’s no place but home… There’s no place but home.
Cathy says
Roy…hmm…could be. LOL! Thanks for sharing a laugh just in time for the weekend. 🙂
Ramiro Rodriguez says
I can’t stop smiling. Incredibly creative and insightful at the same time. I used to think I was the Lion but lately I feel more the poor Scarecrow 🙂
Cathy says
Hi Ramiro-sorry about the delay in responding. I had to remove you from my spam folder – how rude. 🙂
I loved the Lion, but they’re all good. Thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the RT! Have a great weekend.
Kim Lemon says
This was wonderful Cathy!
Following all the latest and greatest in social media feels like trying to keep up with the latest fashion trends…has a kind of cool and hip factor associated with it.
I say, good for you for keeping abreast of it all… AND… staying humble.
Cathy says
Kim: I wasn’t one to keep up on fashion either. 🙂 But, I do appreciate the vote of confidence. Thanks for stopping by, Kim.
Lori says
I can’t even tell you where they dropped my colon. LOL
Great post, Cathy.
Cathy says
Oh nooo, Lori-sounds serious. 😀
Wendy says
I think some of those sites are more like Toto. Too much yipping about nothing. Love the post!
Cathy says
Toto, too, Wendy? Too funny! 😀 Thanks for stopping by (and your little dog, too). 🙂
